Fixed mobile convergence (FMC), a hot topic several years ago, has become confusing because many implementations never dealt with fixed at all. Instead, Gartner has proposed a new term -- mobile unified communications (MUC) -- to better illustrate the integration of wireless networks and the ability of devices to traverse them, combined with the overlay of applications such as e-mail, instant messaging, voice calls and intelligent routing using presence and context capabilities. This debate will discuss the future of network and applications as either a progression of the operator-created term FMC or the newer view as MUC. |
