Dr. Carsten SorensenMobile phones, laptops, mobile e-mail clients . . . No longer a nice-to-have tool for special groups of professionals, advanced mobile and ubiquitous information technologies are part of everyday operations. Seen as mobile information services, they provide an unprecedented capacity for workers of all kinds to coordinate activities, exchange opinions and gossip. In order to unlock the true strategic potential of mobile services, we must understand how social relationships at work are mediated by specific technical capabilities. An in-depth understanding of the social and organizational consequences is just as necessary as in-depth technical prowess. Without it, organizations risk sub-optimal utilization or even decreased productivity.
