Politics is challenging for almost everyone. For CIOs and IT leaders, there are many potential political risks and challenges to face, due to the unique nature of IT. While technologies can be installed, configured and retired, the level of complexity is minimal in comparison to the complex political situations each and every CIO must face. At the same time, the corporate and organizational politics of most organizations as they relate to IT are predictable. CIOs can use a specific set of tools to predict, avoid, and deal with potential political and IT landmines.

Following informal networking coffee break from 15.45, the workshop will commence at 16.15 in the Ponant Suite, Carlton InterContinental Hotel. Based on EXP case study research, we will focus on how CIOs engage the external customer. While a critical portion of leading IT is effectively engaging internal customers, a select group of CIOs and IT leaders are spending significant time with external customers. Time with external customers is well spent and helps drive business results. There are multiple customer engagement models which can be appropriate for you depending upon the nature of your business model and your industry. We will also focus more broadly on the issue of how CIOs are spending their time across various stakeholder groups, and how time spent varies or is similar based on gender. The session will include global data from the Gartner 2008 CIO Survey. We’ll examine how you spend your time and how you might optimize it for strategic results.
