Since business services are assembled from software services, which consume data services, all require an agile information architecture. Services will be managed and the metadata about them stored in a repository, along with rules for maintaining their integrity. We'll explain how metadata forms the glue to managing the data services function within your SOA, and assuring that master data is high quality, accessible and available as a called service.

MDM offers a solid starting point for new service-oriented architecture (SOA) deployments. To make MDM work effectively, legacy data stores that keep a copy of master data for use in applications, and the emerging MDM systems, need to evolve, so that interaction between the two is radically simpler, faster and more easily managed. Gartner explores a SOA approach to MDM.

Approaches to implementing MDM are diverging across industries, use cases, data domains and implementation style vectors. Every firm starts from a different place — with a different technology stack, governance framework, and organization and political structure — and this makes "adopting MDM" very difficult. We'll highlight the more common patterns we see in MDM. We'll explore where enterprises start their MDM journey, then map these to an MDM reference model and explore the different paths to achieve MDM.
