Gartner’s ITScore for Infrastructure & Operations is a maturity model that enables you to ascertain where to focus to make the largest improvement in I&O as fast as possible. During this Gartner analyst facilitated workshop, you will exercise the model to estimate the maturity of your I&O environment. Additionally, you will be working with peers to devise best practices to improve I&O in four critical dimensions: people, process, technology and business management. (This workshop is designed as a hands-on companion to Session C10 The I&O Maturity Model for 2011: A Road Map to Excellence; however, you do not necessarily need to attend both to obtain a lot of value!)

Virtualization is an obligatory function—not a single technology, nor simply a set of technologies buried in infrastructure. It also has important ramifications for business use of IT, business itself, and for all aspects of IT, from architecture to development and on into production. Virtualization changes how IT is acquired, implemented, managed and used, and how software is priced and licensed. It means new forms of applications and delivery models, even becoming an enabler of cloud computing. Users will have their own virtualization visions, and build toward it with a constantly updated strategic plan.

Cloud computing is coming to the enterprise from all directions, and quickly. Some services are quite mature, but most are not. The majority of enterprises are experimenting with public cloud services and building their own private cloud services, whether they know it or not. Cloud computing has tremendous promise, but the challenges and the dangers are bigger than most realize. Virtualization has morphed from a hot consolidation trend to a hot private cloud computing trend. The challenge is to keep up with the cloud computing juggernaut—leverage what works, avoid what doesn't, and plan for what's coming.

Meanwhile, the proportions of mission-critical applications are growing, due to application integration and componentization, and they are being changed and enhanced more frequently due to rapidly changing business requirements and the use of more agile development methodologies. The result can be increased application and business process downtime if resiliency strategies, architectures and processes are not well developed and executed. If your business is demanding higher levels of availability—or 100% availability, you will not want to miss this presentation.

The evolution of virtualization and ubiquitous IP networks has created an ideal environment to migrate communications to hosted and cloud based models, yet adoption has been meager. Blame can spread around to weak market offerings, poor performance, lack of standards and over-hyped solutions, but the maturity gap is beginning to close. Providers like Microsoft, Google and Amazon start to shape the enterprises and your architecture, and you have two options: ignore it or move hosted/cloud projects from whiteboard to beta status. This session will look at how you choose applications/workloads, providers and support level you need to need get moving.

The combination of fabric-based architectures, resource pools and virtualization is diminishing the concept of monolithic, physical and discrete hardware/software systems. The traditional, tightly coupled hardware/operating system/hosted applications on a physically bounded system will evaporate in the transformed data center of tomorrow. We will assess the emerging new model of computing from the perspective of the system, procurement, life cycle and vendor competitive dynamics.
