Enterprise Architecture plays a key role in an organization's competitive advantage - but it's a new game, with new rules. It needs to be more integrated with the business. It needs to be more flexible. It needs to incorporate data management, business processes, mobility, security, compliance, among its many layers.

The New EA - Less Is More

Wednesday, December 05, 2007 01:15 PM - Despite the best intentions, the standards proliferated by enterprise architects gain the reputation of being impediments to agility. Given the decades of struggle to establish the value of EA, clearly a new approach is needed. It starts with the understanding that enterprise architects are first and foremost "change agents." This leads directly to a "less is more" approach, in which fewer but more essential EA constraints enable greater simplicity and agility where it matters most. Such a "less is more" approach turns the traditional top-down command-and-control approach to architecture on its head, resulting in a middle-out inversion of control. (45 min)

Wednesday, December 05, 2007 02:15 PM - Today's executives are faced with a blinding number of strategic initiatives, all meant to "Transform the Business." The potential for conflicting objectives and waste of resources is high, just as enterprises need to meet the challenges of changing customer demands, evolving regulatory environments and increasingly competitive markets. Trying to fulfill the requirements of too many masters can place the CIO - and the entire IT organization - at risk, for lack of sufficient resources. A unified approach to strategy and execution is required, and EA can lead the way. (1 hr)

Wednesday, December 05, 2007 03:30 PM - In 2007, we identified eight key issues for enterprise architecture. These issues, if not addressed, will be disastrous for enterprise architecture teams, with a potential ripple effect into both IT and the business. Most key issues deal with non-technical concerns, and how each concern is addressed varies with each organization. In this presentation: we’ll explore each issue and provide approaches to addressing them based upon your organization’s personality profile characteristics. (1 hr)

Wednesday, December 05, 2007 03:30 PM - In this user panel, co-moderated by Gartner and the SOA Consortium, several EA practitioners will look at the links, synergies and differences between SOA and enterprise architecture. How does SOA fit into the EA picture? How can it help make EA more valuable? Does SOA need to be part of a broader EA? Hear from our panelists -- their firsthand experience and lessons learned, and ask them your own SOA/EA questions. (1 hr)

Wednesday, December 05, 2007 04:45 PM - SOA is not just Web services -- at least not for the EA team. All areas of EA are increasingly enabled using a service-oriented approach. This session will describe a full EA framework view of services, from business process services (shared function), information services (shared information), technical services (shared infrastructure) and, finally, solutions including applications and application services (shared systems). With service orientation, we recommend taking a portfolio approach, with separate views of each type of service, yet with the ability to map dependencies across these portfolios -- a new focus of EA repository and other tools. This session will focus on: (1 hr)

Thursday, December 06, 2007 08:30 AM - For any business to have a (bright) future, it needs to continuously transform. Enterprise architects are at a critical juncture where technology and business meet, and where transformation can effectively, visibly take place. But in order to transform the business, you first need to know the business. How your business makes money, what it stands for and where it is going. Technical standards and framework diagrams are nice, but in order to be an agent of transformation, your first mission is to look at EA from a CEO point of view. In this keynote, celebrated author and business advisor Ram Charan will explain how to learn to take the CEO perspective, and the skills and behaviors that will help you execute on his – and your – strategy. Join Dave Pacheco from Disney Company and James Rogers from Troux Technologies as they discuss tangible examples of success in creating business value with existing strategic planning investments.
Thursday, December 06, 2007 02:00 PM - The future is about architecting the lines, not the boxes. This presentation addresses how organizations are moving from application-centric models (the boxes) toward meta-architectures of platforms, infrastrucures and ecosystems (the lines). Examples show how this enables oganizations to organize, share and exchange information more rapidly, unbounded by proprietary, application-specific protocols. (1 hr)

Thursday, December 06, 2007 03:15 PM - The architectural styles of SOA and Web 2.0 are diverging instead of converging. This is troubling for enterprises that expected SOA to provide a single unified approach. Until a unified approach emerges, or even if it can, we must understand the fundamental differences between WS-* services (SOA) and POX or REST services (Web 2.0). (1 hr)

Thursday, December 06, 2007 03:15 PM - Many decision makers leverage such metrics as budgets and projected returns to help prioritize project investments – but often fail to include the architecture viewpoint, where future-state strategies and guidelines are developed separately from the normal project pipeline. Enterprise architecture (EA) can provide an umbrella approach to identify such investment criteria for project portfolio management (PPM). By providing a framework and process to discuss the future state of project deliverables, EA provides a business-driven, enterprise-level methodology to determining project value outside of single-project business cases. All this additional information will improve PPM decision making. (1 hr)

Thursday, December 06, 2007 04:30 PM - While great leaders, in the words of John D. Rockefeller, turn disasters into opportunities, unfortunately, in the wrong hands, great opportunities can be turned into unmitigated disasters. Such is the case of the brilliant, experienced, but “irritating” architect who led a multi-year effort that wasted millions of dollars and set his organization’s EA clock significantly back in time. This session will demonstrate how this architect misread the business context, power dynamics and the role of EA. We will then review approaches that can avoid those missteps and help you “lead from the back” in a way that works for the short- and long-term interests of your enterprise, and the individuals involved or affected by your EA program.
