Monday, April 28, 2008 09:15 - Business process management (BPM) is a management discipline that requires organizations to shift to process-centric thinking and reduce their reliance on traditional function-centric organizational structures. BPM helps organizations manage the revision cycles of business processes, from process design to monitoring and optimization. It also helps organizations modify processes more frequently and effectively in response to rapidly evolving circumstances. Such rapid change is impractical when processes are embedded in conventional applications, but BPM offers a new approach to application development, where business processes are made visible. BPM technologies enable business managers to abstract process flows and rules from underlying applications and to change them directly. BPM is an IT-enabled management discipline that dramatically changes how businesses manage their operational processes. (1 hr)

Monday, April 28, 2008 17:35 - When looking at organizations implementing BPM, many different approaches can be observed. The focus might be on process documentation, in other cases on methodologies like Lean or Six Sigma, while others take it from the IT side, or just leave it to the training department to provide some knowledge building for those who are interested. Where do these different policies come from? Why do some managers welcome BPM as a key instrument to achieve excellent process performance, while others are so reluctant or maybe even refuse to implement it? And why are isolated initiatives accepted and even supported, without ever being seen as a real, concrete and overall management approach to improve the business?
In this Keynote Presentation Eddy will address key issues, supported by concrete examples of successful (and less successful) BPM implementations: (45 min)

Tuesday, April 29, 2008 15:50 - Application portfolio management strategies have not kept up with the changing nature of applications. Application-at-the-center perspectives fail to account for the dramatic increase in cross-application reuse, referenced service components and an ever-expanding user constituency. Budgets and projects that used to be application-centric and megaproject-oriented now shift to incremental delivery around major business processes whose implementation often cross many underlying applications. Application management strategies that don't keep up will yield a new generation of applications that may be built on modern technology, yet embody the stovepipe limitations of their predecessors. Modern strategies can raise reuse, shorten cycle times, and improve business process and results. (1 hr)

Wednesday, April 30, 2008 09:45 - Banking must embrace rigorous compliance requirements from regulators and, due to increased competition, stringent requirements placed on it by demanding customers. In order to articulate these requirements effectively and also meet the objectives of the shareholders, an innovative solution was required; one that would enable project leverage where possible. To enable projects to leverage each other as much as possible, the ABN AMRO BPM solutions department designed and implemented a Business Process Management methodology. This methodology or approach leveraged external best practice processes and created one compliant Business Architecture which encompassed multiple requirements and viewpoints from disparate groups: business, IT, compliance, operational risk, finance and audit. This comprehensive Business Architecture is the basis for the implementation of one global Group Finance SOA. (40 min)
