Years have passed since the first privacy laws and the first major security breaches woke application developers up to a new reality: They must build secure applications and they must protect sensitive data from misuse and unapproved access. To build security into applications — particularly in emerging areas such as cloud and mobile — requires thoughtfulness not only about languages and code but also about application architecture and the development process. Approaching security the right way enables developers and architects to make their applications more secure while not being an overburdening undertaking.

•How does security best fit into overall application design?
• What application security activities help make life easier?
• How does application security work in cloud and mobile?

Today’s applications are very different from those developed even a few years ago. They must be more flexible, accessible, capable of being deployed both in the cloud and on premises while managing vast amounts and numerous types of rapidly changing data, and provide consumer-grade experiences. The focal point of modern, cloud-ready application design is how information is created, consumed and augmented.

• What is information-first design?
• How does this differ from existing conventional design approaches?
• What kinds of applications benefit from these design patterns?

As traditionally defined ALM is a misnomer. An application has a life-cycle bigger than requirements, development and testing and the market is rapidly evolving driven by agile and the need to scale what started as small independent teams into a more efficient pipeline for the delivery of applications. This includes a shift toward a product centered planning focus and incorporation of PPM functionality into Agile planning tools, the emergence of DevOps and a toolset that looks at the life-cycle of the application rather than a development project. These changes drive the need for an improved terminology and taxonomy. In this workshop, conference attendees will examine the fundamentals of new methodologies and be introduced to Gartner’s product definitions and understand where market leading tools fit in this taxonomy.

Developing and managing applications for IaaS starts with the provider’s API. Most IaaS providers use an API to create, start, stop, manage the various services they provide. The problem is, these APIs are different and proprietary. In addition, building applications requires in-depth knowledge of how these services are build and how to host application platforms within the IaaS service. This workshop is an overview of a few of the IaaS providers, their APIs, and how to use them to develop and manage applications in IaaS.

Web APIs are emerging as a way for organizations to deal with the mobile, social, cloud and big data nexus of forces. But organizations that aren't careful will find that underlying their Web API is a tangled implementation that brings back memories of traditional software design rot and increasing technical debt.
